UK photographer Steve Poxon has created a genius body of work in experimental fashion which emulates the early photogram process. The images you see above are highly detailed scans of “objects of interest”. The results are visually intriguing, achieving both a patternistic and graphic composite. Steve explains:

The objects are scanned at a high resolution preserving a density of detail that is beyond the limits of the human eye. This places them almost into a hyper reality where the viewer feels like they can almost reach out and touch them. The verisimilitude of the images coupled with the choice of objects creates a confusing situation for the viewer; do they really want to examine these objects up close or do they want to relish in the detail of the disgusting and grotesque?

Steve’s work was included in Creative Review‘s ‘Best Degree Show Work 2007′ (photography category) and it has also been featured in the British Journal of Photography. In 2008, he was honored with a prize in the ‘Nikon Discovery Awards’ for his Abnormal Beauty Series.

Intriguing stuff – the detail issue is that of any visual artwork and the viewer trying to establish trying an ideal viewing point – brushstroke detail or whole battle scene perspective?

Hyper-reality – don’t know how it translates to the brain, but it is what I seek in the written word as well. In order to blast trumpets at the Jericho of reality and bring it crashing down?

Paricularly liked Abnormal No 4 – something almost evolutionary/fossil like about it.

Hi Marc! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You are right, Steve’s work is intriguing both in terms of the curious individual bits and also the entire composite… 2 very different perspectives. It’s really nice having a writer’s vantage point on this. And yes, Abnormal No. 4 is quite choice. For me, it rates high up there with the first image (Null) which Steve has already heard me swoon about. :) Thank you again!

Thank you both for your words. Its great to hear what people have to say about your work and their thoughts and feelings towards it. I always find it intriguing to to see which pieces people prefer and pick out. Both Abnormal No.4 and Null where probably my two least favourite of the series when creating the work as I found it hard to pattern the work both with shape and colour, so I always find it strange when people pick those two.

Thanks again for the thoughts

Steve
