The FROM THE POCKET project features images captured using iPhone cameras by Chicago-based photographer, Jeremy Edwards. Images are processed using iPhone photography applications only. The intention of the project was to highlight the beauty of the ordinary. The motivation of the project is to remain true to the authenticity of spontaneous subjects and minimize unnecessary processing that I’m convinced washes out the organic beauty of simple subjects. For the most part, as it stands today, the growing medium of iphoneography has yet to mature into a substantial art form that is respected by the entire art community. I hope my project will serve as a valuable contribution to the growth of iphoneography with artistic integrity.

More about Jeremy:

I was born in Chicago and grew up in the south. I have degrees in Communications, International Development, and  International Public Service Management. I lived in Japan and China for over 3 years working in community education and development. I’ve resided in Chicago since 2005. In addition to being a photographer, I am also a musician and father of a lovely two-year old boy named Owyn.

My father purchased my first Canon Rebel film camera when I was 16. Shortly afterward, I found myself in dark rooms, studios, and shooting for newspapers as a mere hobby throughout college. After moving abroad, my photography matured into an intentional expression of art. I’m constantly exploring new mediums. I purchased my first iPhone in late 2008 and was immediately struck with the experience of capturing images with raw spontaneity. Just like others, I have a deep artistic appreciation of the ordinary and mundane. I feel that our obsession with production, progress, and aesthetics has trained our eyes to ignore the beauty in the ordinary. This is why I created the FROM THE POCKET project.

Prints available via Jeremy’s website. FROM THE POCKET: BOOK ONE is in early production with Blurb—anticipated release date is Spring 2010.

Really nice photographs, and I love the saturated colours and slightly fuzzy quality; reminds me of Lomography in those ways. Hard to believe they were taken with an iPhone!

The story told and the story unsaid. I appreciate these images for both traits in that as a viewer I want to linger to digest all… the visual as seen and my collective interpretations.

I agree that in many instances processing can be a false goal. Pinhole photos have been a longtime favorite of mine for that reason. Jeremy’s iPhotos are now a companion favorite on all levels.

Thanks for sharing.
