This is Puerto Rico’s biggest festival, celebrated in February and culminating an extensive holiday season. The artwork celebrates and documents traditional Puerto Rican festival masks, from Ponce, Loiza, Hatillo, Tainos and some of my own creation.

Manuel-Olmo Rodriguez (aka OlmoCS, Olmo Creative Source) is a designer and illustrator based in Puerto Rico. I am very pleased to present a sample of his beautiful work—visual communication that is simultaneously graphic, illustrative and typographic. I asked Manuel to tell me about his background:

I am a graphic designer from and living in Puerto Rico. I am also married with three great kids. I received a BA in 1993 (two majors: Fine Arts and Visual Communications Design) from Purdue University in Indiana. My formal education was complemented with internships in a newspaper (illustrator), design boutique (print media), advertising agency (assistant designer) and as a book binder (manually sewing and gluing).

Upon graduation and after 6 years of experience as a graphic designer, art director and account executive working for advertising agencies and design boutiques, I decided to go solo and recapture the process, principles and essence of design. Since then I’ve had a great and challenging career as a freelance graphic designer.

Creating logos and developing brands has been my passion but I have also had the opportunity to develop advertising and promotional efforts for local and international brands. This sparked the interest to learn more about the “business of design”, branding and strategy.

On the side I continue to research and produce personal artwork with the purpose of learning and documenting folk and culture and exploring illustration and typography.

I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with Manuel on twitter for quite some time now. I highly recommend following him (@olmocs) as his curated tweets are A+.
