LIFE photographer Henry Groskinsky (1934–) is best known for his compelling documentary photography of April 4, 1968—a dark day in American history, the day Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. Mr. Groskinsky and writer Mike Silva had unprecedented access at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Many of the photos went unpublished until 2009, 41 years later. See these photos here and with Mr. Groskinky’s accompanying narration here.

German American photographer Andreas Feininger (1906–1999) is best known for his black and white photography of Manhattan and studies of the structure of natural objects. He also was a writer on photographic technique. Mr. Feininger was educated as an architect in Germany where his father painted and taught at Bauhaus. He later gave up architecture and picked up photography. From 1943 to 1962 he worked as a staff photographer for LIFE. Learn more.
