digmeout – Japan.

by Amy@AQ-V on June 8, 2010

I recently was bouncing around the internet in an unsuccessful attempt to research a specific something and in the process landed upon something else which piqued my interest. You can probably relate.

That alternative something in this case was an art book series titled digmeout published by Petit Grand Publishing in Japan. These books originate from the digmeout project which was begun approximately 10 years ago to “dig-out and support fresh talented (Japanese) artists to kick start their art career”.

According to the website, digmeout’s first art book was published in 2001 and subsequent issues were published until 2006. In addition to opening a gallery/cafe in Osaka in 2002, they also formed an ad agency called digmeout FACTORY in 2004. But their website and blog updates go silent in 2008. Hmm, possibly they flamed out.

However, there are back issues of the art books still available for purchase; some at collector prices, some for less. If you live in Japan Issue 06 is still available from Petit’s online store. All other issues are sold out.

Outside of Japan you will find a handful of digmeout issues online at AmazonAlibris and other out of print book resellers ranging in price from approximately $10 to $130 USD. If you are a fan of contemporary Japanese art and illustration you will want to take a peek and consider picking up a copy for your library. They are sure to increase in value over the years.
