Life and Problems of a Danish Student / Illustrated by Tegner Ging

A super charming find—a small saddle-stitched booklet from Denmark brimming with entertaining copy, quintessential Scandinavian illustrations, delicate typography plus much pride demonstrated in its beautiful print quality. Unfortunately, in my research to date I have uncovered little to nothing on the gifted illustrator Tegner Ging.

The focus of the booklet is on Egmont H. Petersen College (Egmont Kollegiet) in Copenhagen which was established in the early 1950s. “Presently the Egmont Kollegiet is home to 492 students who study everything from theology to astro physics, everyone benefiting from the many various facilities that Egmont Kollegiet provides.”

Note from the editors:

The present booklet is a special edition of the House Monthly, the aim of which in the college period is to unite 325 inmates of the College, who cannot possibly know one another personally, by commenting and debating indoor events and topics of general interest.

The reason why we publish this summer edition is that in this way we hope to comply with the guests’ want of knowing a little about Denmark, this extraordinary hotel and its ordinary inmates. A want which we know by experience. The profit of this edition will be administered by the Students’ Committee and used for buying works of art and books, for arrangements with artists and lecturers, etc.

The Egmont Summer appears on the initiative of the staff of the House Monthly and the printing has been performed at Egmont H. Petersen’s printing office, part of the Egmont H. Petersen Foundation, which has donated this College to Danish students.

We wish to thank you who bought this booklet and thus helped to support cultural activity at the College.

I knew Tegner Ging, he stayed at our house in 1953-4 while living in the USA. When he went back to Denmark, he provided commercial art work for many Danish companies including bill boards for a beer company. What ever happened to him? He was about 20 years younger that my father, so he was born in the mid 1930s.

Hi Peer- Thank you for leaving a comment. Great to hear from someone who knew Mr. Ging as my research online came up dry. And yes, would be curious to learn if he is still living. I hope someone who knows comes across this post. Thanks again! –Amy

Tegner Ging was a good friend of the Gerlach family. In 1957 Ging gave me a Danish Viking watercolor he just finished, while I was in Denmark. You can see a copy on eBay listed in arts as ‘Scandinavia Viking scene’. I would love to have a copy of your Egmont College booklet illustrated by Tegner Ging. Maybe we could exchange artwork? I am still looking for Ging. Thanks for your interest in Ging’s artwork.
Regards,
Peer
