Gottschalk + Ash was founded in Montreal in 1966 when Swiss-born Fritz Gottschalk and Canadian native Stuart Ash joined forces. The present day Toronto and Zürich firm specializes in brand communication and environmental graphic design. Almost five decades going, this successful partnership has garnered numerous awards. Past work has included Canadian postage stamps, the Canadian Confederation Centennial logomark and a re-design of the Swiss Passport.

Sandi Vincent grew up in the bay area of California surrounded by mid-century modern architecture and other influences responsible for her affinity for the period and its pop style, including her early exposure to The Monkees, The Avengers and Gerald McBoing-Boing. Sandi now resides in Portland and is a board member of a local nonprofit preservation group, the Mid-Century Modern League. In her day job at a community foundation, she sports the web/social media/print materials coordinator title.

Stuart Ash – Canada Centennial Logo, 1967:
In 1966 Stuart Ash of Gottschalk + Ash designed the keen Canadian Confederation Centennial logomark, a maple leaf comprised of 11 equilateral triangles to represent the 10 Canadian provinces and the territories. As seen below, I recently came across a souvenir plate with an appropriation of Mr. Ash’s original logo. Must confess, I do not think the addition of the bold black outline does the beautiful mark any favors but is it a handsome bit of history nonetheless…
