In Memory.

Mr. Julius Shulman passed away Wednesday night at the tender age of 98. For those unfamiliar with Mr. Shulman’s iconic mid-century photography it is the type of extraordinary you will definitely want to become acquainted with. Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman is a documentary film by Erik Bricker which explores the monumental career of this architectural photographer. (Mr. Shulman was actually still taking photography and lecture assignments at age 98!)

“Populating his photos with human models and striking landscapes, Shulman combined the organic with the synthetic, melding nature with revolutionary urban design. The resulting images helped to shape the careers of some of the greatest architects of the 20th Century, with Shulman documenting the work of Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, Pierre Koenig, John Lautner, and many others.” (continued below)

“An uncompromising critic of coldness and abstraction in modern design, Shulman not only had a historic role in the creation of the Southern California architectural landscape, but he has also fought for green spaces and against over development.”Julius Shulman Film Website

Mid-Century Checkmate.

by Amy@AQ-V on June 24, 2009

These stunning chess pieces below are part of the highly collectible 1962 Austin Enterprises Extruded Aluminum Chess Set. It was one of 2 aluminum chess set designs created by Austin E. Cox in the 60’s. These sets can easily fetch $1,000+. I have heard stories of folks finding these at the local thrift shop for chump change. All I can say is keep your eyes peeled. I know mine are. These sets came with a stylish window storage box which was designed to hang on the wall as an object d’art when not in use.

There are a few sets currently available for purchase on Ebay. Go ahead, take a peek. To learn more about this Austin Cox Chess Set and see additional images including the metal hallmark to look for on the bottom of the pieces, check out the blog of David Hart, aka The Invisible Agent.

Above and below are images of the 1970’s Space Age Universum Chess Set by Arthur Elliott for Anri in Italy. Found at the Mid-Century Modernist. This alpine maple + black walnut set is another highly collectible/high cotton item. Mr. Elliott was an artist and designer. He was one of the earliest animators for Disney Studios.
