Los Angeles artist Jerry Shawback truly has a keen eye and hand. Each day on flickr he posts yet another marvelous gesture drawing as part of his ongoing 365 days of drawing project. There in his moleskin he documents the lives and experiences around him and his continuing study of the human form. I was immediately struck by how much information Jerry is able to communicate about his subjects with his rapid and expressive line work.
To me true creativity is the process by which we better ourselves. The way we can do this is through learning, about ourselves, the world and how we relate to others. This is what I try to do with my drawing.
But drawing is only one aspect of Jerry’s skill set as he is primarily a painter. (See his rich and varied exploratory self-portrait series on The Whole 9.) And then there is Jerry’s previous career as a designer and animator for the entertainment industry after studying communication design at the Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design, a division of the New School for Social Research. In 2007 Jerry returned to his studio art and it remains his primary focus. His work has been featured in shows throughout Southern California as well as in private collections.
