// The Studio Magazine – Champion of Modernism //

Above and below are striking Modernist covers of The Studio art magazine, circa 1960s. These images come courtesy of my good friend, the very talented young illustrator Katie Allen in the UK. Katie works at a secondary school (ages 11 to 16) and recently unearthed these beauties in the school’s collection of “rubbish”. These magazines are part of a larger batch of vintage art mags that had been donated to the school’s art department and have fallen into disuse. Katie has been instructed to clear these bits out. A lovely number are currently up for sale on eBay (view↑) with more on the way after the holidays. All proceeds will go to purchase art supplies for the students at her school, a school which has little funding she points out. So this is a great opportunity to snatch up collectible Mid-Century Modern eye candy all the while supporting arts education for well deserving youth. Learn more about The Studio magazine below.

The Studio was an illustrated fine arts and decorative arts magazine, founded in Britain in 1893, which exerted a major influence on the development of the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements. It promoted the work of “New Art” artists, designers and architects and played a major part in introducing the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Charles Voysey to a wide audience—and it was especially influential in Europe.

From 1906 onwards Studio published an annual survey, The Studio Year-Book of Decorative Art, dedicated to the latest trends in architecture, interior design, furniture lighting, glassware, textiles, metalwork and ceramics. These annuals championed Modernism in the 1920s and later the “Good Design” movement. In the later 20th century the annuals gave increasing prominence to architecture and interior design and in the mid-1960s it was retitled Decorative Art in Modern Interiors. The annual ceased publication in 1980. –Wikipedia
