Beautifully intricate ink drawings by artist Caitlin Foster are executed with such tender care and elaborate detail but with simultaneous restraint. This sophisticated visual balance and complexity begs one to lean in closer. Screen representations I know in no way can do these wonderfully organic works justice. (Select images have been cropped and/or enlarged for optimized viewing.) I asked Caitlin to tell me more about her work and inspirations…

I look at patterns found in everything immediately surrounding me, both natural and unnatural. I look at the wood grain in my floor, rocks in the sidewalk, my houseplants, grass, leaves, stones collected from the beach, bathroom tiling, etc. I’m aesthetically influenced by a lot of film, and like the stark minimalism of black and white, and how it creates tension and drama, as well as a beautiful simplicity.

“Everything must come to one out of one’s own nature. There is no use telling a person a thing that he does not feel and can’t understand. ” –Oscar Wilde
