Inspired by Mid-20th century art and design, New York artist/illustrator Matte Stephens creates wonderfully infectious work brimming with pattern and play and marked by largely warm earthy color palettes. Matte lists iconic industrial and graphic designers such as the Eames, Alexander Girard and George Nelson plus mid-century artists Ben Shahn and Paul Klee and the amazing Irving Harper (designer for George Nelson) amongst his top influences. (For an extra treat, read about Matte’s dreamy day spent with Mr. Harper and his wife here.)
It is obvious Matte is well loved—both he and his wife, talented artist Vivienne Strauss-Stephens. To my point, Matte has amassed an enthusiastic following and host of collectors, not to mention a very impressive client list including IBM, American Express and Herman Miller.
In addition to samples of Matte’s keen original gouache paintings and art prints, I have also included a glimpse of his mid-century design collection—printed ephemera, furniture, objects and ceramics—as it pairs so well with his art work. (View more of his expanding collection here.)
