Choice 20th century work by legendary Canadian artist/designer Burton Kramer (1932–) is sure to please anyone with a penchant for bold Modernist design including International Typographic Style (aka Swiss Style). Above you see samples of various iconic graphics; additionally, Mr. Kramer is known for designing Montreal’s prominent Expo ’67 wayfinding system.

Kramer was born in New York City and studied graphic design at both the Institute of Design in Chicago (originally the New Bauhaus) and Yale University before enjoying a successful design career in Zurich, Switzerland. In 1965 he moved to Toronto and put his mark on the city serving as “a driving force behind that city’s reputation as a lively, modernist environment.” (RIT)

Kramer launched his own firm, Kramer Design, in 1967 which is still thriving today. He retired from graphic design in 1991 but actively continues as an artist.

Above is a sneak peek of the recently published career retrospective book Burton Kramer Identities edited by Greg Durrell and documentary film in the works also by Greg Durrell.
