The French card game Mille Bornes (French for ‘a thousand milestones’) was created in 1954 by Edmond Dujardin. It is a derivation of the popular American auto game Touring, originally patented in 1906 and manufactured by Parker Brothers beginning in 1925. (source: wikipedia)

The version of Mille Bornes I own is a Parker Brothers variety from 1962. The crisp graphic illustrations you see samples of above and below were designed in 1960 by French graphic designer Joseph Le Callennec.

For a more comprehensive post on the history of Mille Bornes complete with multiple package designs over the years visit Codex 99. I certainly would like to get my hands on the beautifully abstract game package from 1960 entitled ‘Edition Spécial’.

Interesting to see how the design visually straddles the 1950s “Dick and Jane” illustrative style and the later 1960s pop art. You can see some elements of both.

Extremely popular game called (in english): Thousand milestones. Very funny, and beautiful. Good memories (souvenirs) from my youth.
