ABOUT THE POSTER:

Reinhold Visuals—Portfolio 8: Space , #10

Packaging is, in essence, the solving of spacial problems. Neatly and graphically expressing this theme, Matter’s construction is indeed an “ingenious package.” It presents a spacial problem in the form of a perceptual puzzle—the volume it defines is ambiguous, and it is virtually impossible to decide exactly how the elements are organized in space.

The geometric preciseness of this work is deceptive, rather than an air to interpretation. The strongest elements of the design—the black bands—describe a two-dimensional, six-pointed star, but this figure also encloses space. Repeating the paradox, the white bands for a hexagon, but, as extensions of the black bands, further delimit space. Together, the black and white bands compose a three-dimensional frame that supports one sheet of transparent plexiglass and rests on (or encloses at the base) another sheet. The floor, marked off in modular units that form a patter of perspective cubes, adds ambiguity, serving both as ground and background to the construction. Finally, at the center of this puzzle is the most tantalizing element—the tricolor “contents” of the ingenious package. We perceive a cube, positioned in the center (or is it a corner?) of the space defined by the plexiglass and black and white frame. But this central element of the design is completely flat. it consists of flat colors, and the form that pushes its way into three-dimensionality is a pseudo-cube of the artist’s contriving and out mistaken perception of space.
