What a great thrill to recently find these impeccable large scale vintage color plates of advertising posters by legendary Ukrainian-French painter, poster artist and typeface designer Adolphe Mouron (1901–1968) who worked under the pseudonym A.M. Cassandre. We owe a great deal to Mr. Cassandre as his innovative, pioneering vision revolutionized the visual communication design world beginning in the 1920s and onward during his career hey days of the 1930s. He remains influential now many years later. His 1935 Normandie poster is described as his most well known design. Mr. Cassandre was inspired by the avant-garde art movements of Surrealism and Cubism—his popular commercial posters denoting iconic painters Max Ernst and Picasso.
In tandem with his poster designs Cassandre’s advertising agency, Alliance Graphique, developed typefaces Bifur, Peignot and Acier Noir in the 1920s and 1930s respectively. There is much information to digest about Mr. Cassandre as his accomplishments were numerous and his influence is unmistakeable. Instead of yammering on I will direct you to some choice linkage and references including the official website by Roland Mouron (estate of A.M. Cassandre) where you can view Cassandre’s many works plus the out of print book, A.M. Cassandre, authored by his son Henri Mouron, published in 1985.
