I initially planned to title this post after the featured crisply illustrated map above, Untamed London: Where Nature Still Runs Wild in the Big City. But for obvious reasons that would not not do in light of recent events. This newest city guide by Herb Lester Associates is a toast to a much gentler form of nature—not the complex and shocking human variety. It is brimming with eighty-two entries to discover natural habitats co-existing with urbanity in fair London plus longer contributions detailing birdwatching, fishing and more in collaboration with Caught by the River. Creative Jez Burrows designed and illustrated this lovely guide.
After two thousand years of human habitation, it is quite remarkable how much green space remains in this city. Our latest guide, Untamed London: where nature still runs wild in the big city, charts places all but untouched by human hand: ancient woodland and meadows, marshes and rivers. It also locates those heartening spots where man has lost the battle with nature and wild plants have taken root amid concrete and brick.
A big thanks to Ben Olins of HLA for sending me a cheery parcel of their pocket-sized folded guides to London, Glasgow, Paris and New York City. They are a real treat marked by playful and vivid illustration and copywriting plus of course wonderful information to guide you to your next off the beaten path destination. I highly recommend these guides as gifts in addition to fetching them for yourself. Be sure to check out their shop for their latest offerings including The London map collection which includes “Untamed London” plus four other city guides.
