Eunah Kim – Helvetica Detector.

by Amy@AQ-V on March 20, 2011

The Helvetica Detector is a clever educational tool by NYC graphic designer/artist Eunah Kim. Eunah is a 2009 graduate of the prestigious School of Visual Arts (SVA). She created this project during her senior year to heighten fellow students’ awareness of the ever present nature of Helvetica in our daily lives. In her own words…

Helvetica is the most ubiquitous typeface in our lives. Widely considered the official typeface of the twentieth century, Helvetica communicates with simple, well-proportioned letterforms that convey an aesthetic clarity that is at once universal, neutral, and undeniably modern.

Before entering School of Visual Arts Room 302 in which many typography classes are held, the Helvetica Detector scans persons for items using Helvetica. This service is free of charge and helps make students aware of the ubiquity of Helvetica.

Massimo Vignelli has a lot to answer for but it’s interesting that as each generation of young designers rerediscovers Helvetica we enter or find ourselves in a climate of utilitarian socialism.
